GP Fault in Olivetti EVD 256_1024.DRV Video Driver

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Olivetti EVD 1024x768 256-color 1 megabyte (MB) video driver, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault when you change from many pages view to one page view.

CAUSE

This problem has been reported to occur with the following drivers:

    - Olivetti EVD 1024x768 256 Color 1Mbyte Large Font
    - Olivetti EVD 1024x768 256 Color 1Mbyte Small Font

NOTE: This driver is supplied with some Olivetti M4-62 (486 sx33) and M4-66 (486 dx266) IBM-compatible computers.

This problem has been isolated to the video BIOS for these computers. The error occurs with BIOS 1.09 and 2.0. It does not occur with video BIOS. 1.50.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the standard VGA video driver supplied with Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows version 6.x for Windows 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
