Gram32.ini Created on desktop when Customizing Grammar

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

When you customize Word's grammar settings, a Gram32.ini file is created on the desktop of the two platforms listed above.

NOTE: Word for Windows 95 running on Windows NT, version 3.51 will create the Gram32.ini file in the \Winword folder.

WORKAROUND

The Gram32.ini can be moved to the Word for Windows program folder (for example, \Msoffice\Winword). This will allow the settings to be retained and modified without re-creating a .ini file on the desktop.

Word for Windows 95 stores the custom grammar settings in the Gram32.ini file. This file is not copied during installation and does not exist until a change has been made to the default Grammar settings. Once the change is made, the Gram32.ini file is created on the Windows desktop.

If the Gram32.ini file is moved to the \Winword folder, Word will locate the file and will not create another one on the Windows desktop. The location of the Gram32.ini is written to the Data key in the Registry. If the Data key is removed, the Grammar Options will be reset to the default. Once the Grammar Options are modified, then the Gram32.ini will once again be written to the Windows desktop.

The location of the Data key in the Windows Registry is as follows:

   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Word\7.0\Data

To edit the Windows Registry, use the following steps:

1. Click Run on the Start menu.

2. On the Open line, type "REGEDIT" (without the quotation marks)

   and click OK.

3. Select the + signs to the left of the following folders (keys):

   +HKEY_CURRENT_USER
        +Software
            + Microsoft
                 +Word
                      +7.0

4. Select the Data folder (key) and choose Delete from the Edit menu.

5. Click Exit on the Registry menu.

Changes to the Grammar settings must be made through Word using the following procedure:

1. Start Word.

2. On the Tools menu, click Options. Select the Grammar tab.

3. Click the Customize button and make any changes.

4. Click OK to exit the Grammar Options dialog. These changes will be

   written to the Windows Registry Word Data key.
