The information in this article applies to:
When you use the Bullets and Numbering command on the Format menu (or the Numbering button on the Standard toolbar) to number cells in a Word for Windows table, you can only include one sequence of numbers in the table. If you insert a second sequence of numbers in the table, Word continues the numbering from the first set of numbers, even if you want to start over at 1. For example, Word starts the second set of numbers in the sample table below at 5 instead of 1:
1. First Numbered List
2. First Numbered List
3. First Numbered List
4. First Numbered List
5. Second Numbered List
6. Second Numbered List
7. Second Numbered List
8. Second Numbered List
To include more than one sequence of numbers in a Word table using the Numbering command, insert a continuous section break above the row where you want to restart the numbering sequence. Use the following instructions to create two separate numbering sequences in a Word table:
1. In your Word table, apply the numbering formatting. Word numbers the
cells in a single sequence.
2. Position the insertion point in the last cell of the row in which you
want to start a second numbering sequence. Using the sample table above,
position the insertion point at the end of the fifth row (in the cell
that contains number 5).
3. From the Insert menu, choose Break.
4. Under Section Breaks, select the Continuous option and then choose OK.
Word restarts the numbering of the current row at 1. The sample table
above now appears as follows:
1. First Numbered List
2. First Numbered List
3. First Numbered List
4. First Numbered List
1. Second Numbered List
2. Second Numbered List
3. Second Numbered List
4. Second Numbered List
This problem does not occur in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh.
