This article describes how to sort from the top left to the bottom right cell of a table, such as in the following example:

To do this, you must first convert the table to text so that Word performs
the sort based on paragraphs.
To perform this type of sort, do the following:
1. Select the table or rows of a table that are to be sorted. (Make a note
of the number of columns.)
2. From the Table menu, choose Convert Table To Text.
3. Under Separate Text With, select Paragraph Marks, and choose OK.
4. With the paragraphs still selected, choose Sort Text from the Table
menu. Under Sort By, select Paragraphs. Select the appropriate Type
category (Text, Date or Number), and choose OK.
5. Select the sorted paragraphs and choose Convert Text To Table from the
Table menu. In the Convert Text To Table dialog box, enter the number of
columns from Step 1 above. Under Separate Text At, select Paragraphs.
Choose OK.
