XL: Disables Energy Saving Features of Monitors

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Excel, the energy saving feature of monitors may not work. When the low-power standby mode is invoked, the monitor will go blank, and then the monitor will come back on immediately. The monitor will no longer be in low-power standby mode.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

• Any version of Microsoft Excel is running as the foreground program in Windows 95.

      -and-
  

• The low-power standby mode for the monitor is invoked.

      -and-
  

• You are not using a screen saver.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, run a screen saver program. To run a screen saver program, use the following steps:

1. On the taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control

   Panel.

3. Click the Screen Saver tab.

4. Select one of the screen savers from the Screen Saver box.

This will ensure that a screen saver is run before the low-power standby and shut off monitor modes are invoked.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
