The information in this article applies to:
If you insert a SECTION field in a text box that is located in any section of a document, the result of the SECTION field is 1 instead of the correct number. For example, if a text box containing a SECTION field is located in section 4 of your Word document, the result is 1 instead of 4.
This problem occurs regardless of the type of section breaks your document contains, and it happens even if you select the SECTION field and press F9 to update it.
This problem occurs only when the SECTION field is located in a text box. The result is correct if the SECTION field is located anywhere other than a text box. Therefore, you can use the following procedure to reference the correct SECTION field result in your text box:
1. Position the insertion point outside the text box somewhere in the
section where the text box is located.
2. Insert the SECTION field.
3. Select the SECTION field and then click Bookmark on the Edit menu.
4. Type a bookmark name and then click OK.
5. In the text box, insert a REF field that references the bookmark you
inserted in steps 3 and 4 above.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c for Windows and Word 6.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.
