The information in this article applies to:
You may receive Error 1084, "Word cannot open this document template," when you open or save an HTML document. When you open the document, it appears blank, even though the document still contains text.
The DOT-PATH line in your WINWORD6.INI file is pointing to a location where your HTML template does not exist. The DOT-PATH line is a reflection of the User Templates setting in Word. To correct the problem, see the "Resolution" section below.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
To set the correct path to your templates:
1. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
2. Select the File Locations tab.
3. Select User Templates and choose the Modify button.
4. Select the correct path to your templates and choose OK.
5. Choose Close.
6. Exit and restart Word.
The text should now be displayed when you open an HTML document, and you should not receive the above error message.
