XL: Error Switching to a Workbook Window While Help Is Open

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a
• Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you switch to a workbook window while a Help window is visible, you may receive on of the following error messages:

   The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because
   an error of type 1 occurred.
   You should save your work in other open applications and
   restart the computer.

    -or-

   Sorry, a system error occurred.
   Microsoft Excel error type 11.

    -or-

   Cannot move or modify part of a pivot table.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

• Two or more workbook windows are open.

      -and-
  

• A Help window is visible.

      -and-
  

• You are in edit mode.

      -and-
  

• You try to switch to a workbook that is different from the one you are editing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
