In some cases, if you paste a graphic or imported object (such as a Microsoft Excel chart) into Microsoft Word for Windows, it may only be visible in outline view. This can result from an incompatible paragraph line spacing setting in the Paragraph dialog box that causes the chart or picture to be compressed.
This problem can occur with any picture, graphic or imported object. If you select an absolute line spacing, only the bottom portion of a picture may display when you insert it into a paragraph with absolute line spacing. You can see the chart in outline view because outline view ignores paragraph formatting.
This applies to versions 2.0 of Word for Windows and later (setting the line spacing option to Exactly 0.16 in Word For Windows version 2.0 is the same as setting line spacing to -0.16 in version 1.x). A negative value in version 1.x is the same as setting the value to Exactly in Word 2.0.
"Float over text" is the default if you insert or paste a graphic or object in Word 97. With this feature, the item is placed in the drawing layer and is not affected by paragraph line spacing. If you had previously disabled this feature for an item, you will still experience the problem. To turn "Float over text" back on:
1. Select the object.
2. On the Format menu, click Picture or Object.
3. Click the Position tab and select the "Float over text" check box.
The absolute line spacing is to small to display the whole graphic. To change the line spacing to show the whole graphic:
1. Select the graphic or inserted object.
2. On the Format menu, click Paragraph.
3. From the Line Spacing drop-down box, select any option except Exactly.
