In any version of Microsoft Word for Windows, the sort feature may not sort numbers correctly if you are configured for something other than United States in the International Settings in the Control Panel in Windows. This will only occur if you are set for Canada (English) or for Portugal in the Country box.
If you are set up for Canada (English) or for Portugal, you cannot use numeric as your key type for the sort. However, if you set the key type to alphanumeric, the numbers will sort.
1. In the Windows Control Panel, select International.
2. Select Canada (English) in the Country box and choose OK.
3. Exit the Control Panel and start Word for Windows.
4. Type "1" (without the quotation marks) on the first line, and
press ENTER.
5. Type "2" (without the quotation marks) on the second line.
Select the "1" and the "2".
6. If you are using Word for Windows 2.0, choose Sorting from the
Tools menu. If you are using an earlier version, choose Sort
from the Utilities menu.
7. Select Descending in the Sorting Order box, then select
Numeric in the Key Type box. Choose OK.
8. Note that the numbers did not sort. However, if you go back
and select Alphanumeric as the key type, the numbers will sort.
