Summary Info Comments Are Truncated, Deleted Saving to HTML

ID: Q129609

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Comments added to the Summary Info dialog box are truncated or replaced by HTML document HEAD elements--specifically ISINDEX, BASE, NextID and META information--when you convert your document to HTML. Internet Assistant does not currently support the Link attribute.

CAUSE

The Comments text box is limited to 256 characters. HEAD elements take precedence over Comments because of their importance within the HTML document structure. When the combined HEAD elements reach or exceed 256 characters, your comments may be truncated or replaced.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, versions 1.0 and 1.0z. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS

Use one of the following methods to add lengthy comments to your document:

Method 1: Use the HTML Markup command to insert a comment tag in the HTML

          source. To do this:

          a. From the Insert menu, choose HTML Markup.

          b. Type the HTML tag, so that it looks similar to this:

             <!--your comment here-->

          c. Choose OK.

Method 2: Place your comments within the document and format the text as
hidden. Hidden text will convert to the comment <!--...-->
element. You can apply hidden formatting by first selecting the
          text and then pressing CTRL+SHIFT+H.

Method 3: Open your HTML document as Text Only and manually insert the
          comment element.
