Text in Table Cell Does Not Sort Properly

SYMPTOMS

When you sort text in a single table cell, some of the text may disappear or jump to the next column, and the entire table becomes selected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the selected text is immediately followed by the end-of-cell character in the table. In other words, there is no paragraph mark at the end of the last entry to be sorted, and the table cell itself is not selected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh and Word version 6.0 for NT Windows.

WORKAROUND

Temporarily insert an extra paragraph mark at the end of the last entry, select and sort the text, and then remove the added paragraph mark.
