The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.x, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0, 6.0.1

SYMPTOMS

When you print a document that contains an underlined tab character, text that precedes the underlined tab may also be printed with an underline.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you use the Apple LaserWriter driver, and it is more likely to occur when you use the Times font in small point sizes.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Select Fractional Widths. To do this, use the steps that are appropriate for your version of Word.

          Word 6.0 and 6.0.1
          ------------------

             a. Click Options on the Tools menu.

             b. Click the Print tab.

             c. Select the Fractional Widths check box.

             d. Click OK.

          Word 4.0, 5., and 5.1
          ---------------------

             a. Click Page Setup on the File menu.

             b. Click Fractional Widths.

             c. Click OK.

          Word 3.x
          --------

             a. Click Print on the File menu.

             b. Click Fractional Widths.

             c. Click OK.

Method 2: Select the text to which you applied the underline format and
increase the font size to 12 or greater. (This method does not
change the appearance of the line when you print the document).

Method 3: Use a tab leader instead of the underline format. To do this, use
the steps that are appropriate for your version of Word.

          Word 6.0 and 6.0.1
          ------------------

          a. Select the text to which you applied the underline format and
             remove the underline format.

          b. On the Format menu, click Tabs.

          c. In the Tab Stop Position box, click the tab that you want to
             associate with a leader.

          d. Click the underline tab leader (number 4) and click OK.

          Word 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1
          ----------------------

          a. Select the text to which you applied the underline format and
             remove the underline format.

          b. On the Format menu, click Paragraph.

          c. Click Tabs.

          d. Click the tab marker on the ruler that you want to associate
             with a leader.

          e. Click the underline tab leader in the Tabs dialog box, and
             click OK.

          f. Click OK again.
