Using Find File Command to Locate Password-Protected Files

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

If you search for a password-protected file using the Find File command from the File menu, Word for Windows cannot find the file using any criteria except the filename. The Find File command cannot open a password-protected file to perform a search based on document text or Summary Info criteria.

MORE INFORMATION

In the Find File dialog box, the following information is different or is unavailable for password-protected files:

• Summary Information: No data appears in the Summary Information dialog box.
• Statistics: In the Document Statistics dialog box, the Create and Last Saved dates appear. The # Of Characters value is the number of bytes in the file rather than the number of characters in the document. This number changes to the number of characters in the file once the file is no longer password protected.
• Contents: Word prompts you for the password before displaying the document contents.
• Title: The title does not appear.
