In some cases, when you check spelling of words in a table, Word will neither check spelling in the background (check spelling as you type) nor will it mark misspelled words.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

To work around this problem, do one of the following:

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
3. Under Spelling, click to select the "Check spelling as you type" check
box.
NOTE: If this check box is cleared, Word will neither check spelling in
your document as you type nor will it mark misspelled words with red
wavy lines.
4. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
