WD: Can Drag Toolbar Off the Screen While Pressing COMMAND

Last reviewed: February 3, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Word for the Macintosh does not dock a toolbar at the edge of the Word window if you press the COMMAND key while you drag the toolbar. As a result, you can drag most of the toolbar past the edge of the screen, where it is not visible.

CAUSE

By default, Word docks a toolbar at the edge of the screen, which prevents you from dragging the toolbar off the screen. When you hold down the COMMAND key while dragging a toolbar, however, Word overrides this default behavior, so you can drag the toolbar past the edge of the screen.

In Word 6.0 and later, you no longer need to press the COMMAND key to drag a toolbar to a new location with the mouse. This functionality is different in Word 6.0 than in earlier versions of Word for the Macintosh, in which you must press the COMMAND key in order to drag a toolbar to a new location.

WORKAROUND

If you drag a toolbar off the screen, you can restore its position by double-clicking an empty area on the toolbar.

To move the toolbar within the Word window, you don't need to press the COMMAND key. You can move the toolbar by positioning the mouse pointer in an empty area on the toolbar and then dragging the toolbar to the location you want. When you reach the edge of the Word window, the dotted outline of the toolbar stops, even if you continue dragging.
