WD: Can't Check Spelling in Text Box Located in Header/Footer

• Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
• Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
• Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you check spelling in a text box in the header or footer of a document, you may experience the following behavior:

   Microsoft Word for Windows 7.x or 97:

   The Header/Footer toolbar appears on top of the Spelling dialog box, and
   you are unable to continue.

   Microsoft Word 6.x for Windows:

   You receive the message "The spelling is complete" even though
   incorrectly spelled words remain in the text box.

WORKAROUND

Microsoft Word for Windows 97

If the Header And Footer toolbar appears on top of the Spelling dialog box, use the following steps to continue to check spelling in your document:

1. Click the Header And Footer toolbar and move it out of the way of the Spelling dialog box.

2. Use the Spelling dialog box to continue checking spelling in the document.

Microsoft Word for Windows 7.x

If the Header And Footer toolbar appears on top of the Spelling dialog box, use the following steps to continue to check spelling in your document:

1. Click the Header And Footer toolbar and move it out of the way of the Spelling dialog box.

2. Click the Resume button in the Spelling dialog box to continue checking spelling in the document.

Microsoft Word for Windows 6.x

To check spelling in a text box in the header or footer:

1. On the View menu, click Header And Footer.

2. Click in the text box area.

   A gray border will appear.

3. On the Tools menu, click Spelling.

4. Repeat this procedure for any remaining text boxes in either the header or footer of the document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
