Use one of the following methods appropriate for your situation:
To create a template with a different first page header and footer, follow these steps:
1. Create a new Word document by clicking New on the Standard
toolbar.
2. Insert a Page Break by pressing CTRL+ENTER once.
This will create a two-page document.
3. Position the insertion point on page one by pressing CTRL+HOME.
4. On the View menu, click Header And Footer.
5. Click the Page Setup button on the Header And Footer toolbar.
6. Click the Layout tab.
7. Select the "Different First Page" option. From the Section Start list,
select New Page, and then click OK.
8. Use the following steps to create the Headers and Footers:
a. Create the first page header in the First Page Header area.
b. Click the "Switch Between Header and Footer" button on the Header
and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the First
Page Footer area.
c. Create the first page footer.
d. Press PAGE DOWN to position the insertion point in the Header area,
and then create the page header for the second and subsequent
pages.
e. Click the "Switch Between Header and Footer" button on the Header
and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Footer
area. Create the page footer for the second and subsequent pages.
9. To return to your document, click the Close button on the Header and
Footer toolbar.
10. Delete the page break from the document.
11. Save the document in Document Template file format. To do this, follow
these steps:
a. On the File menu, click Save As.
b. In the Save As Type box, select Document Template.
c. Type in a name and click Save.
To create a template with different odd and even headers and footers, follow these steps:
1. Create a new Word document by clicking New on the Standard toolbar.
2. Insert two Page Breaks by pressing CTRL+ENTER twice. This will create
a three page document.
3. Position the insertion point on the page one by pressing CTRL+HOME.
4. On the View menu, click Header And Footer.
5. Click the Page Setup button on the Header And Footer toolbar.
6. Click the Layout tab.
7. Select the "Different Odd and Even" option. From the Section Start
list, select New Page and then click OK.
8. Use the following steps to create the odd and even page headers and
footers:
a. Create the odd page header in the Odd Page Header area.
b. Click the Show Next button on the Header And Footer toolbar to
position the insertion point in the Even Page Header area.
c. Create the Even Page Header.
9. To return to your document, click the Close button on the Header and
Footer toolbar.
10. Delete all the page breaks from the document.
11. Save the document in Document Template file format. To do this, follow
these steps:
a. On the File menu, click Save As.
b. In the Save As Type box, select Document Template.
c. Type in a name and click Save.

b. Click the "Switch Between Header and Footer" button on the Header
And Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the First
Page Footer area.
c. Create the first page footer.
d. Press PAGE DOWN to position the insertion point in the Even Page
Header area.
e. Create the even page header.
f. Click the "Switch Between Header and Footer" button on the Header
and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Even Page
Footer area.
g. Create the even page footer.
h. Press PAGE DOWN to position the insertion point in the Odd Page
Header area.
i. Create the odd page header.
j. Click the "Switch Between Header and Footer" button on the Header
and Footer toolbar to position the insertion point in the Odd Page
Footer area.
k. Create the odd page footer.
9. To return to your document, click the Close button on the Header and
Footer toolbar.
10. Delete all the page breaks from the document.
11. Save the document in Document Template file format. To do this, follow
these steps:
a. On the File menu, click Save As.
b. In the Save As Type box, select Document Template.
c. Type in a name and click Save.
For additional help, click Answer Wizard on the Help menu, type in "How do create a header", and click Search.
For additional help, click "Search for help on" on the Help menu. Type in the word "header". Select the topic "Creating and deleting" under "Headers and Footer", and click Display. Then select "Create headers and footers" and click Display.
