The information in this article applies to:
Customizations that you make to the TOC styles in your document are lost.
When you create a table of contents using any Format other than From Template, those formats will redefine any changes that you have made to the TOC style definitions. The styles are reset to their default settings.
Therefore, if you change the format of your table of contents back to the From Template format, any changes that you made to the TOC styles within the document will be returned to their default settings. That is, custom TOC settings will be lost.
To save the customization to the TOC style to the template, follow these steps:
1. On the Format menu, click Style.
2. Under Style, select a table of contents style (for example, select
TOC1), and then click Modify. Make the desired changes to the style
definition, click Add To Template, and then click OK.
3. Click Close.
The following workaround will work only if you apply the following steps immediately after applying a Table Of Contents Format other than From Template. To re-apply the TOC style definition from your template to your Table of Contents, follow these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click Templates And Add-ins.
2. Click "Automatically update document styles," and then click OK.
3. Save and close the document.
4. Exit or Quit Word and the re-start Word.
5. Open the document containing the Table of Contents.
The style from the template should update the TOC style.
If the TOC style is not updated, follow these steps:
1. On the Format menu, click Style.
2. Click Organizer and click the Styles tab.
3. On the side of your template (the default is the Normal template),
select TOC1, and then click Copy. Click Yes to confirm the overwriting
of the style.
4. Click Close.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
