WD: Equation Editor Brackets Broken on Mac QuickDraw Printers

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q80468

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh versions 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

In Word, problems may be experienced when printing Equation Editor brackets to a QuickDraw printer. While the brackets display correctly on screen in Normal and in Print Preview, they may become broken when printed.

CAUSE

This occurs if the equation was created while both the bitmap and TrueType versions of Symbol are present in the system. (If only the TrueType Symbol font is present at the time of creation, the equation will print correctly.)

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The key component is the time of creation. If the bitmap version of the Symbol font was present at the time of creation, the problem cannot be resolved by simply taking the bitmap version of the font out of the system. To update and correct an equation, double-click on the equation in the document to load it into the Equation Editor, and from the File menu, choose Quit. This must be done for each incorrect equation.

This is a problem with all non-PostScript printers, including the DeskWriter, StyleWriter, LaserWriter LS, and so on.
