WD: Format and Font Menus Not Showing Checks

SYMPTOMS

In Word for the Macintosh, the Font box and Font Size boxes may appear blank, and no font is selected in the drop-down font list.

CAUSE

This can occur for one of two reasons:

  • More than 500 characters of a document are selected at a time.

    -or-

  • A part of the selection differs in format from the rest of the selection.

NOTE: In Word 6.x, the number of characters may vary from 500, depending on the number of paragraphs in the selection.

Word also does not display a check mark next to the font on the Font menu if the font of the selected text is not installed on the System. In this case, the font size as well as other character formats do have the correct check marks next to them.

STATUS

This behavior is by design. In case number one listed above, the restriction of 500 characters improves the speed of the program.
