The information in this article applies to:
In Word for Windows 2.x, if you are in Normal view and you choose Header/Footer from the View menu, you are prompted with a dialog box. Once you specify header or footer, Word displays the header or footer pane in a split screen. In Word 6.x and 7.x, if you choose Header and Footer, the document switches to page layout view and displays the header with the document dimmed.
This article describes how to get the Word 2.x functionality in Word 6.x and 7.x for Windows and Word 6.x for the Macintosh. In order to display the dialog box the way it is displayed in Word 2.x, use one of the following macros:
Word for Windows, version 6.x Word for Windows NT, version 6.x
For more information on how to obtain the Supplemental Macros for Word 6.x for Windows, please see the following Knowledge Base article:

1. On the Tools menu, click Macro.
2. Click Organizer.

for Windows 95, select Word2ViewHeaderFooter.
If you are using Word for the Macintosh 6.x, select
NormalViewHeaderFooter.
3. Click Run.
The command that allows this functionality is NormalViewHeaderArea. By itself, the NormalViewHeaderArea command displays the header area in a split screen. Because the dialog box prompt is not displayed, as in Word 2.x, you only have the option to choose header; however, you can scroll down to the footer.
1. On the Tools menu, click Macro.
2. In the Macros Available In box, select Word Commands.
3. Under Macro Name, select or type NormalViewHeaderArea.
4. Click Run.
