The information in this article applies to:
When you create a custom multilevel list (using the Bullets And Numbering command from the Format menu) in Word, you cannot make the resulting format the default for use in other Word documents. The Bullets And Numbering command in Word creates a document-only format.
To store the multilevel list format you created so you can quickly apply the format to future documents, use the Macro Recorder in Word.
To record the macro, follow these steps:
1. Plan the formatting sequence in advance. Run through a practice setup
and write down the steps for creating the multilevel format desired.
This will ensure that no unnecessary steps are recorded and ensures the
macro's efficiency in later use.
2. Open a new document based on the Normal template.
3. On the Tools menu, click Macro.
4. Click Record.
5. Give your macro a name and click OK. (Note: You can also assign the
macro to a toolbar, menu, or keyboard combination before choosing OK.)
6. On the Format menu, click Bullets And Numbering.
7. Select the Multilevel tab and select one of the predefined formats
closest to the one desired.
8. Click Modify.
9. Make the necessary modifications to each of the levels for the custom
multilevel format.
10. Once all the levels are modified as desired, click OK.
11. Stop the Macro Recorder by clicking Macro on the Tools menu and
clicking the Stop Recording button, or by clicking the Stop button on
the Macro Record Toolbar.
The macro is now finished and can be used to format multilevel
numbering with a custom format.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Products listed above. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
Custom formatting (that is, manual formatting or applying styles) for your multilevel lists should be applied AFTER the multilevel list format has been applied.
