WD: How to Toggle Field Codes Off and On in Word

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word you can toggle field codes on and off. To do this, click Options on the Tools menu (in Word 98 Macintosh Edition, click Preferences on the Tools menu), click the View tab, and click to select (turn on) or clear (turn off) the Field Codes check box.

To quickly toggle field codes display, press ALT+F9 (OPTION+F9 on the Macintosh).

To add field codes to the View menu, use the appropriate method for your version of Word.

Word 97 for Windows or Word 98 Macintosh Edition

1. On the Tools menu, click Customize and then click the Commands tab.

2. In the Categories list, select All Commands.

3. In the Commands list, select ViewFieldCodes.

4. Click and hold the mouse button and drag ViewFieldCodes to the View menu. The View menu will drop down. Position the mouse pointer at the location you want the View Field Codes command and then release the mouse button.

   NOTE: In Word 98 Macintosh Edition, you must add the ViewFieldCodes command to a toolbar--you cannot add it to a menu.

5. In the Customize dialog box, click Close.

Word 6.x, 7.x

1. On the Tools menu, click Customize. Click the Menu tab.

2. In the Categories box, select All Commands.

3. In the Commands box, select ViewFieldCodes.

4. In the Change What Menu box, select &View.

5. Click Add.

6. Click Close.

NOTE: When you add the ViewFieldCodes button to a toolbar and field codes are toggled on or off with the keyboard (ALT+F9), the button does not show the new state of the field codes until you move the insertion point or clicks the mouse.

Click the Office Assistant, type "shortcut keys," click Search, and then click to view "Shortcut keys."

Double-click the Help button on the Standard toolbar. Then type "shortcut keys, lists of" (without the quotation marks) and click Show Topics. Select "Using Keyboard Shortcuts in Word" and click Go To.
