SUMMARY

The outline view in Word for the Macintosh can display only character formatting and not paragraph, section, or document formatting changes to Word's defaults. For instance, Section formatting defaults to Start New Page, one column, and Line Numbers Off.

To view other formatting while in outline view, use either the split bar or the New Window command (on the Window menu). In versions 6.0 or later there is a Show Formatting button on the Outlining toolbar.

In Word 4.0, before clicking Outline on the Document menu, either click New Window on the Window menu or use the split bar.

To activate the split bar in Word, pull down the black box directly underneath the zoom box in the upper-right corner of the document window. This produces two simultaneous viewing windows. With two windows open, changes can be made to the outline in one window while the other window displays the paragraph formatting changes.
