WD: Numbered Tables with Shading May Not Print Properly

SYMPTOMS

A table may be printed with shading in the second row if that table meets the following criteria:

It contains shading in the first row.

```
It contains a first column that has number formatting applied to it.
```
    -and-
```
It contains a second column that contains text that wraps within the cell.

This shading was not applied to the second row and does not appear in print preview.

This problem occurs with all printer drivers. This problem does not occur if the third row or the number formatting is removed from the table.

WORKAROUND

Method 1

Insert a new blank row between the shaded row and the row that starts the numbered sequence:

1. Click in the table row where the numbering starts.

2. On the Table menu, click Select Row.

   The table row should be selected.

3. On the Table menu, click Insert Row.

   A new table row is inserted and the new row is selected.

4. Click the Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar.

   This will turn the numbering off for the new row.

5. With the new row still selected:

   a. On the Table menu, click "Cell Height and Width."

   b. Click the Row tab, change the Height Of Row to Exactly and in the
      At box, type "1 pt" (without the quotation marks).

   c. Click OK.

Method 2

If there are only a few numbered paragraphs, manually number the paragraphs instead of using the numbering format.

Alternatively, if you have a long list of numbers with some parts improperly shaded, the improperly shaded areas can be corrected by using the following method:

1. Insert extra paragraph marks after the text in the table cell that is

   improperly shaded. The number of paragraph marks should be equal to the
   number of lines that appear in the adjacent cell in column 2.

2. Remove the numbering from those empty paragraphs.

   The next numbered paragraph will now be incorrect because by default
   Word restarts numbering if there are unnumbered paragraphs between
   numbered ones.

3. Place the insertion point in the paragraph that is now improperly

   numbered and click Bullets And Numbering on the Format menu. Choose
   Modify and set the Start At value to the proper number in the sequence.

Repeat these steps for other improperly shaded areas.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97.
