WD: REF Field in ASK or FILLIN Field Updates for Print Preview

SYMPTOMS

When a REF field is used inside an ASK or FILLIN field, the prompt portion of the ASK or FILLIN field appears every time you click Print Preview on the File menu.

For example, if you use the following fields in the document

     {ASK firstname "What's your name?"}
     {ASK lastname "What's your last name, {REF firstname}?"}

when you click Print Preview on the File menu, you are prompted to type your last name again. You receive this message each time you enter Print Preview.

NOTE: If you don't update the {ASK lastname...} field, you won't be prompted when you enter Print Preview.

WORKAROUND

Eliminate any REF fields from the ASK or FILLIN fields.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Word 97 for Windows and Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
