WD6X: "Not Enough Memory" Errors Inserting AutoText Entries

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q144961
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you click AutoText on the Edit menu, you may receive the following error message:

There is not enough memory to complete the operation.

This error message is also displayed when you attempt to copy AutoText entries from one template to another using the Organizer.

Although you cannot insert AutoText entries via the AutoText command on the Edit menu, you can insert them using the keyboard shortcut: COMMAND+OPTION+V.

CAUSE

This error message may occur when you have a large number of AutoText entries stored in the active template. As a result, you are running low on available memory. The number of AutoText entries is limited by available memory.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, store your AutoText entries in separate templates, and add each template to the Global Templates and Add-in list (File menu). When you need to use the AutoText entries, click Templates on the File menu, select the templates that contain the AutoText entries, and click OK.

While these templates are available globally, you cannot insert AutoText entries via the Edit menu, but you can use the keyboard shortcut. To edit the AutoText entries, open the template that contains the AutoText entry you want to edit.
