WD6X: "Unable to Start Due to an Error" Starting MacWord 6.0

Last reviewed: December 3, 1997
Article ID: Q121473
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

When you start Word for the Macintosh, you may receive the following error message:

The application was unable to start due to an error. Please contact
   customer support.

After you choose OK, Word stops responding.

CAUSE

You may be running version 3.12 or earlier of the Greg's Buttons third- party shareware application.

-or-

You may be running Suitcase version 2.11.

-or-

You may have a corrupted font.

RESOLUTION

Remove Greg's Buttons and restart your Macintosh. Greg's Buttons is located in the Control Panels folder of the System Folder.

-or-

Remove Suitcase version 2.11 and restart your Macintosh.

-or-

Follow these steps:

  1. In the System folder, rename the Fonts folder to a different name. For example, change the name to "Fonts Temp" (without the quotation marks).

  2. Restart your computer so the System will create a new Fonts folder.

  3. Start Word. If Word starts without an error message, then you know there was a font problem.

If a font problem is suspected, move several fonts from the renamed font folder to the newly created font folder. Restart your Macintosh and then restart Word. Repeat this procedure until you can determine which font(s) are causing the problem. If a font is found to be corrupted, either move it back to the renamed font folder, or delete the font, and then reinstall your font. Note that corrupted fonts usually have a file size of 0 kilobytes.

STATUS

Newer versions of Greg's Buttons work properly with Word 6.0 for the Macintosh.
