The information in this article applies to:
In a Word master document, if you insert page numbers that include the chapter number, the chapter number may not appear.
If any section in your document is not formatted for page numbering that includes chapter numbers, Word does not include the chapter number in the page number anywhere in the document.
NOTE: If you are working in page layout view, you may not notice that the last section is not formatted for chapter-page numbering. If you switch to normal view, it is easier to view the last section.
Use the following procedure to select the entire master document and apply chapter-page number formatting:
1. Switch to Page Layout or Normal view.
2. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
3. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers.
4. Click the Format button, then select the Include Chapter Number option.
5. From the Chapter Starts With Style list, select the heading style
applied to the chapter headings, then click OK.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for Windows and Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
