When you select a column in a table that contains merged or deleted cells, the selection may appear to zigzag randomly through the columns.
This behavior occurs because cell selection is based on relative position to the first column of the table. Selection of the third column, for example, means selection of the third cell in each row. If the third cell falls after a merged or deleted cell, it may appear in a different relative location and lead to the scattered highlighting affect.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
This behavior is not consistent with the behavior of Word 2.x for Windows, where column selection occurred most frequently in vertical alignment regardless of whether or not cells were deleted or merged.
