WD6X: Error Message: "Word Cannot Save or Create This File"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a Word for the Macintosh document to a shared drive, you MAY receive the following error message

     Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure the disk is not
     write protected (<file name>).

CAUSE

This error message occurs when you try to save a file to a computer whose name is the same as the computer you are working from. For example, your hard drive is named "Macintosh HD," and the name of the computer you are trying to save to is also named "Macintosh HD."

This can also happen with network volume names, such as "Public."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0, 6.0.1 and 6.0.1a for the Macintosh. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, rename one of the computers.
