WD6x: Power Macintosh Hangs When Using Word's Examples and Demos

Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q119622
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a

SYMPTOMS

While running Examples And Demos on an Apple Power Macintosh, Word hangs (stops responding).

CAUSE

This problem occurs because HyperCard version 2.2, which ships with the Power Macintosh, gets into a low memory condition. This low memory situation causes HyperCard to hang (stop responding).

(Examples and Demos is a HyperCard stack. When Examples and Demos is run, HyperCard is started, and it opens the Examples and Demos stack.)

WORKAROUND

To avoid having your computer hang when you access Examples And Demos, allocate more memory to HyperCard by doing the following:

  1. In the Finder, click once on the HyperCard Player program icon.

  2. On the File menu, click Get Info. Set Preferred size to 1500 if memory is limited and you are using CBT from within Word or 2000 if memory is available and you are using CBT as a stand-alone application.

  3. Click Close in the top-left corner of HyperCard Player Info.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
