The information in this article applies to:
When you open the Word Settings (5) file in Microsoft Word 6.0 or 6.0.1, default settings made in the Section dialog of Word 5.x are not merged.
It is possible to retain keystrokes, menu structures, and styles that were created in Word 5.x by merging the Word Settings (5) file. However, section formatting stored in the Word Settings (5) file is ignored. These settings include Line Numbers, Section Start (for example--New Page, New Column, Odd Page), Different First Page, inclusion of Endnotes, and so forth.
To merge the Word Settings (5) file into Word 6.0, follow these steps:
1. On the File menu, click Open.
2. In the List Files Of Type list, click All Files.
3. Locate the System Folder by clicking the directory title at the top. In
the System Folder, open the Preferences Folder.
4. Click Word Settings (5) and select Open.
5. When prompted to merge the settings and styles, choose Merge To
Current.
NOTE: To locate the Section formatting dialog box in Word 6.x, click
Document Layout on the File menu.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 and 6.0.1 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
