The information in this article applies to:
When starting Microsoft Word, you receive a System Error or a Type 1 error and your computer may stop responding.
If Word stops responding immediately after installation, you may have a corrupted font. Unlike Word 5.x, Word 6.0 enumerates the fonts when you start the program. This allows Word to determine whether or not the font supports kerning and other font attributes. By contrast, Word 5.x does not enumerate the fonts, and you would experience problems only if you used the corrupted font in your document.
To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Word.
To work around this problem, isolate and remove the corrupted font.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. This problem was corrected in Word version 6.0.1 for the Macintosh.
