When you open a password-protected document saved from Microsoft Word 97 for Windows on a system with French regional settings, the following error message occurs:

This document has been password protected with an encryption scheme
not available in this region. Word cannot open this document.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: Use a Version of the Document That Is Not Password Protected

Obtain and open a non-password protected version of the document.

Method 2: Change the Regional Settings on the Computer

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Regional Settings.

  3. On the Regional Settings tab, click English (United States), and click OK.

You will be prompted to restart the system for the new settings to take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word 97 for Windows on a system with English (United States) regional settings encrypts a password protected document with a stronger encryption method than does a system with French regional settings.

This problem does not occur if the document was created with the French regional settings and opened on a system with English (United States) regional settings.
