Last reviewed: February 17, 1998
Article ID: Q177451
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you double-click a Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition linked object while Excel is open in the background, nothing happens.

CAUSE

There is a problem with the OLE timing when you double-click to activate Excel.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem.

Method 1: Close Microsoft Excel

  1. In Microsoft Excel, on the File menu, click Quit.

  2. Double-click the linked object in Microsoft Word.

Method 2: Vary the Speed of the Double-Click

If you slow down your regular double-click speed, Excel may finally become active.

NOTE: This seems to be more of a problem with slower computers, such as a PowerMac 8100/100 with 40 megabytes (MB) of RAM.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

To link an object from Excel to Word, follow these steps:

  1. In Excel, select the spreadsheet or chart.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.

  3. Switch to Word.

  4. Position your insertion point in the document where you want the Excel object to appear.

  5. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.

  6. Click the Paste Link button, and then click OK.

After the paste link has been established, you should be able to double- click the object to have Excel open with the spreadsheet containing the information within the link. If you update the information in the Excel spreadsheet, it will automatically update in Word through the link.
