WD98: Hidden Drop-Down List Box Always Reflects First Choice

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Commands tab of the Customize dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click Commands) to add any of the following commands to a custom toolbar or menu

   Borders
   Columns
   Color
   Condensed
   Expanded
   FileOpenFile
   FontSize
   Lowered
   Raised
   Shading

you have the option to select any of a number of items from a drop-down list (this list is displayed at the bottom of the Customize dialog box when you click one of the commands listed in this article).

When you view these entries in the Customize dialog box, if you select one of these commands and you then select another one, the drop-down list is not updated to reflect the new command. That is, if you select Borders first, and you then select Color, the items in the list box for Color are the same as those that are presented for Borders.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods.

Method 1: Close the Customize Dialog Box Between Selections

Select only one custom command at a time and close the Customize dialog box between selections.

Method 2: Drag the Custom Command to a Toolbar or Menu

When you drag the custom command to a toolbar, the drop-down box disappears. The drop-down box reappears with appropriate entries when you click to select the next custom command.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When you select certain commands, the Customize dialog box displays a drop-down list of options specific to the commands. To access the list, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then select the Commands tab.

  2. Under Categories, select All Commands.

  3. Under Commands, select any command from the list of Commands that has a colon next to it (the exception to this rule is the Symbol command-- this command does not invoke a list box). For example, select Borders.

  4. Beside Borders, click the option box and note the items of (none), Top, Bottom, Left, Right, Inside, Box, and Grid.
