The line-numbering function in Microsoft Word for Windows cannot display odd numbers when incremented by two. For example, you cannot create the line-numbering scheme one, three, five, and so on; however, you can create the line-numbering scheme two, four, six, and so on.
In Word for Windows version 2.0, when you choose Section Layout from the Format menu and choose the Line Numbers button, you can specify what number to start the line numbering at. (In Word for Windows version 1.x, activate line numbering by choosing Section from the Format menu and selecting the Line Numbering option.) If you type 1 in the Start At # box and type 2 in the Count By box, Word for Windows starts numbering lines with the number 2. The next number is 4, and so on. This generates the same results as typing 2 in the Start At # box and 2 in the Count By box. The value in the Count By box provides the interval. For example, typing 2 in the Count By box causes Word for Windows to insert a line number every second line.
Line numbering does work as expected for other intervals; for example, typing 1 in the Start At # box and 5 in the Count By box produces line numbers on lines 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.
