You can set negative first-line indents to create hanging indents so the first line of text starts to the left of the normal margins for a paragraph in Microsoft Word for Windows.
Negative left paragraph indents also can be set, having the effect of decreasing the left margin for that paragraph. This may cause the text to display to the left of the normal margin. Depending on the size of the negative setting, you may not be able to see all the text to the left of the normal margins on the display.
Using the horizontal scroll bar, it will appear that the "elevator," the square box indicating the horizontal position in the document, is as far to the left in the scroll bar as it can go. For paragraphs with normal margins, this is true. For paragraphs that have negative first line or left indents, position the insertion point in the paragraph and click the left arrow in the scroll bar and the window scrolls to the right, revealing the text to the left of the normal margins. If you are not in a paragraph with negative first line or left margins and you try to move to the left, Word for Windows will beep, indicating you can move no further.
