SYMPTOMS

The following Word for Windows error may occur when you create a file based on the Newsletter wizard (NEWSLTTR.WIZ):

   Microsoft Word ERR=1078
This file could not be found. (<PATH>\<FILENAME>.WZS)

NOTE: In the above error message, <PATH> is the location of the workstation installation of Word, and <FILENAME> is one of the classic or modern newsletter style files such as MODERN3.WZS or CLASSIC3.WZS.

CAUSE

This error message occurs in a Word session running from a network workstation. The Newsletter wizard incorrectly searches the User Template path (USER-DOT-PATH setting in the [Microsoft Word] section of WINWORD6.INI) for the Newsletter wizard files. Instead, the wizard should search the Workgroup Template Path (WORKGROUP-DOT-PATH setting) for these files.

In a workstation installation of Word, Setup places all the supplied template and wizard files in the Workgroup Template directory. The User Template directory is where Word stores any templates or wizards you create, so it is usually empty after you install Word on a workstation.

NOTE: This problem occurs only when you use the Newsletter wizard. However, once you run the Newsletter wizard, no other Word wizards run correctly during the Word session.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c for Windows. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following workarounds to avoid this error.

Workaround 1: Change User Template Setting

Use the procedure below to temporarily change your User Template (USER-DOT-PATH) setting so it matches the Workgroup Template (WORKGROUP-DOT-PATH) setting. As a similar workaround, you could switch the User Template and Workgroup Template settings with one another.

Note: The drawback to these workarounds is that Word will store your user templates in the Workgroup Templates location unless you restore the original User Template setting after you run the Newsletter wizard. For maximum flexibility, you can create a macro that switches the User Template and Workgroup Template settings as required.

1. From the Tools menu, choose Options and select the File Locations tab.

2. Note the Workgroup Templates Location setting.

3. Select User Templates, then choose the Modify button.

4. In the Location of User Templates box, type the path to the Workgroup

Templates directory (this is the location you noted in step 2 above)
   and then choose OK.

   -or-

Select the Workgroup Templates directory in the Directories and Drives
   lists and then choose OK.

5. Run the Newsletter wizard again. The error message should no longer
   occur.

Workaround 2: Edit the StartWizard Macro in the NEWSLTTR.WIZ File

 3. Open the NEWSLTTR.WIZ file, which is located in the Workgroup Templates
directory (this is the location you noted in step 2 above).

 4. From the Tools menu, choose Macro.

 5. From the Macros Available In list, select Newslttr.wiz (Template).

 6. From the Macro Name list, select StartWizard, and then choose the Edit
    button.
