The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, when you save, close, and then reopen a file that contains worksheets that contain split or frozen panes, the following problems may occur:

  • The frozen or split panes are removed from the worksheets in the file.
  • The active cell is not visible on the screen, and you have to scroll through the worksheet to view the cell.

CAUSE

These problems occur if you save the file in the Lotus 1-2-3 WK3 or WK4 file format.

NOTE: This problem does NOT occur if you save an individual worksheet in the Lotus 1-2-3 WK1 file format, close, and then reopen the worksheet.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following workarounds:

- If you are using only a single worksheet, try saving the worksheet in the

  Lotus 1-2-3 WK1 file format.

Note that the WK1 file format does not support many advanced features,
such as drawing objects, complex formatting, and so on, so use this
   workaround with caution.

    -or-

  • Manually insert the split or frozen panes (click Split or Freeze Panes on the Window menu) when you reopen the file in Microsoft Excel.

    STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
