The information in this article applies to:
When you run Word for Windows under Windows for Workgroups version 3.11, the electronic mail commands may be missing in Word. (Mail commands include the Send and Add Routing Slip commands on the File menu and the Merge To Electronic Mail selection in the mail merge helper.) This also occurs with Word for Windows NT.
When you install Windows for Workgroups version 3.11 or Windows NT, Setup does not add the following lines to your WIN.INI file:
[Mail]
MAPI=1
Word 6.0 enables electronic mail functionality only if it finds the above
WIN.INI entry, so if you run Word before you run Microsoft Mail for the
first time, the electronic mail commands will be missing in Word.
The above WIN.INI setting will be missing until you start Microsoft Mail for the first time. (Microsoft Mail adds this setting to your WIN.INI the first time you run it.) As a result, the electronic mail commands are missing in Word only if you start Word before you run Microsoft Mail for the first time. (This might happen after you install Windows for Workgroups or Windows NT on your computer for the first time.)
Exit Word, start Microsoft Mail, then restart Word. The Mail commands should now appear in Word as expected.
-or-
Add MAPI=1 to the [MAIL] section of the WIN.INI file and restart Windows.
-or-
Delete MAPI=1 in the [MAIL] section of the WIN.INI. Save the WIN.INI and exit Windows. Use a text editor to add MAPI=1 to the [MAIL] section of the WIN.INI and restart Windows.
We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
