SYMPTOMS
========


When you attempt to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, using the Internet and
MSN service type, you may receive the following error message:

   Remote Server Disconnect

CAUSE
=====

This message may appear for these reasons:

 - The TCP/IP protocol bound to the Dial-Up adapter has been damaged. This most
   likely applies if you have connected successfully in the past.

 - Some of the necessary components for the Internet connection are not
   installed, have been damaged, or have not been fully configured. The required
   components are in MSN version 1.3 and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.0
   or 3.0.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

Damaged TCP/IP Protocol
-----------------------

To correct a damaged TCP/IP protocol, remove and reinstall the Dial-Up adapter.
To remove the Dial-Up adapter, follow these steps:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Network.

2. Click TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter.

3. Click Remove.

4. Click OK or Close until you return to Control Panel.

5. Reinstall the component. The following steps are based on Internet Explorer
   versions:

Internet Explorer 3.x or earlier

a. Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to Accessories.

b. Point to Internet Tools, and then click Internet Setup Wizard or Get On The
   Internet. Continue to follow the instructions on the screen.

MSN version 2.5x or 2.6 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5.0

a. Click Start, point to Find and click "Files Or Folders".

b. In the Named box type, icwscrpt.exe, and then click Find Now.

c. In the list of files found, double click icwscrpt.exe. If more than one file
   named icwscrpt.exe then double-click the file with the uppercase I. If any
   dialogue boxes or prompts appear onscreen relating to 'Version Conflicts'
   then click OK.

d. On the desktop, double click on the MSN icon. The following message will
   appear Connection Manager requires some Components that are not installed on
   your computer. Do you want Connection Manager to install these?. Click Yes.
   You may be asked for your Windows 95 CD-Rom or floppy disks.

e. Restart the PC.

Damaged or Missing Components (Classic MSN)
-------------------------------------------

To check the version of MSN, use the right mouse button to click the MSN icon on
the desktop, and then click Properties on the menu that appears. If MSN 1.3 is
installed, the number is 4.3.5899.

If neither version number appears, install MSN 1.3 with the following steps:

1. Double-click the MSN icon.

2. Click Settings.

3. Click Access Numbers.

4. In the Service Type box, click The Microsoft Network.

5. Click Change to select your primary and backup numbers, and then click OK.

6. Connect to MSN. Download MSN version 1.3 when you are prompted to do so.

Follow these steps to check whether Internet Explorer is installed:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, check whether Internet Explorer version 2.0 or
   3.0 appears in the list of installed programs.

If neither version appears, follow these steps:

1. Connect to MSN (using the MSN Only service type) and then download a version
   of Internet Explorer.

2. Use the Internet Setup Wizard (Internet Explorer 2.0) or Get On the Internet
   (Internet Explorer 3.0) to configure your system again. To do so, click the
   Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Internet
   Tools, and then click Internet Setup Wizard or Get On The Internet. Follow
   the instructions on the screen.

Damaged or Missing Components (MSN 2.0)
---------------------------------------

To uninstall and reinstall the MSN 2.0 components, follow these steps:

1. Insert the MSN 2.0 CD-ROM.

2. If the Welcome To MSN screen appears, close it.

3. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files Or Folders".

4. In the Named box, type uninst.exe.

5. In the Look In box, click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Find Now.

6. Double-click the Uninst.exe file to run it.

7. When the Uninst.exe program is finished, restart the computer.

8. Reinsert the MSN 2.0 CD-ROM, and then reinstall MSN.
