ACC: Large, Linked MS Excel Sheet Appears to Hang Report Wizard

When you use the Report Wizard in Microsoft Access 7.0 or 97 to create a report that is based on a linked spreadsheet that is more than 10 megabytes (MB) in size, the wizard takes a long time to create the report. In some cases Microsoft Access may stop responding (hang), or you may receive a "GPF in MSACCESS.EXE" error message.


CAUSE

Depending on the size of the linked spreadsheet, it may take up to an hour or more to create the report with the Report Wizard.


RESOLUTION

To create a report in Microsoft Access that uses a large amount of data from a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, do one of the following:


   Import the spreadsheet into a Microsoft Access database. 

   -or- 

   Create the report without using the Report Wizard.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior


  1. Create a new blank database in Microsoft Access.


  2. Link to a large Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet from the database that you created. The spreadsheet should be 10 MB or more.


  3. Once you have established a link to the spreadsheet, create a report using the Report Wizard.

    Note that the wizard appears to stop responding while it creates the report.
