The information in this article applies to:
When you point to Get External Data on the Data menu and click Create New Query, you receive one of the following error messages:
Command cancelled.
Microsoft Excel did not receive any information from Microsoft Query.
-or-
Microsoft Query could not be started.
You must have Microsoft Query and ODBC installed on your computer in
order to run it.
If Microsoft Query or ODBC is not installed on your computer, run the
Value Pack installer to install it.
This problem occurs if Microsoft Query version 1.0 and Microsoft Query version 8.0 are both installed on the computer.
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
1. Remove Microsoft Query version 1.0.

2. Reinstall Microsoft Query version 8.0. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Insert the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition compact disc (CD)
into the CD-ROM drive.
b. Double-click the Value Pack folder.
c. Double-click the Value Pack Installer.
d. In the Value Pack Installer dialog box, click Data Access, and then
click Install.
e. When the Value Pack Installer is finished, click Quit.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
