The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a hyperlink in a workbook, you may receive the following error message:

   Reference is not valid

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all of the following conditions are true:

  • You create a chart sheet, and the chart sheet is the first sheet in the workbook.

    -and-

  • When you attempt to create a hyperlink in the same workbook, you click "Named location in file (optional)" to find the location in the workbook.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Move the Chart Sheet

If possible, move the chart sheet to another location in the workbook. After you move the chart sheet, you can browse to select a location in the workbook when you create the hyperlink.

Method 2: Type the Location Manually

If you do not move the chart sheet, you cannot browse to select a location in the active workbook. In this case, manually type the location in the "Named location in file (optional)" box.

Example:

For example, if there are two worksheets, Sheet1 and Sheet2, in a workbook, and you want to create a hyperlink in cell A1 of Sheet1 to cell A1 in Sheet2, follow these steps:

  1. Select cell A1 in Sheet1.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.

  3. In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, type "Sheet2!A1" (without the quotation marks) in the "Named location in file (optional)" box.

  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

You do not receive an error message if you select a defined name in the workbook. This is true even if the chart sheet is the first sheet in the workbook.

For example, if there are two worksheets, Sheet1 and Sheet2, in a workbook, and you want to create a hyperlink in cell A1 of Sheet1 to a defined name called Myrange, follow these steps:

  1. Select cell A1 in Sheet1.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.

  3. Click Select next to "Named location in file (optional)."

  4. In the Browse Excel Workbook dialog box, click Defined Name, and then select Myrange in the list of defined names under Defined Name.

  5. Click OK.
