SYMPTOMS
========

A direct Remote Access Service (RAS) connection over a null-modem serial cable
may not connect if one of the devices is not running Windows NT 4.0, and if the
connection is not set to use one stop bit.

CAUSE
=====

RAS Manager is designed to use one stop bit for direct cable connections, no
matter what settings you configure.

RESOLUTION
==========

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to
correct the problem described in this article and should be applied only to
systems experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND
==========

To work around this problem, configure both computers on the direct RAS
connection to use one stop bit.
