XL98: System Hang Sorting a Field in a PivotTable

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to sort a field in a PivotTable, the mouse pointer turns to a stopwatch and your system hangs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

  • You create a PivotTable with more than one row field.

    -and-

  • You merge row labels in the PivotTable.

    -and-

  • You sort a column in the PivotTable.

WORKAROUND

Before you sort data in a PivotTable, clear the Merge Labels check box in the PivotTable Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
