XADM: Cannot Administer Connector on Different Hardware Platform

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following error message when administering the MSMail Connector or IMC on an Exchange server that is installed on a different hardware platform than the Admin program:

Extension "SMTP" (or "MS") could not be loaded.

The extension for the Microsoft Exchange Administrator's CPU type has not been installed in the site.

CAUSE

This is by design. These components require DLL's that are specific to the hardware platform on which they are running. If the files are found on a Microsoft Exchange Server that is running on a different platform than the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program, they attempt to load them from there. Because the DLL's are specific to the hardware platform, the instructions are invalid and an error is displayed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install an Exchange server on the same platform as the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program. For example, if you are trying to administer an Alpha Server from an i386 machine, there needs to be at least one i386 Exchange Server installed in the site that has the Alpha Exchange Server. This results in the extensions for the i386 platform being add to the Add-Ins container, and it also adds e-mail address generators for the i386 platform to the Addressing/E-Mail Address Generators container.
